While Jack Wade had been spending part of his afternoon drinking tea with Clive Salem and Jo Robbins, Heather, Nadine Powers, and Cliveâs wife, Darci, spent the afternoon paying Jackâs prime suspect a visit.
Corinne had sounded gracious when Heather phoned her earlier to ask if she, Darci, and Nadine from the murder posse could stop by, saying she would be happy to see some friendly faces.
Meeting the women at the front door, Corrine was barefoot and wearing ragged blue jeans and a blue and white shirt. Her long hair had been loosed from its usual braid and fell to her waist like a silky black curtain.
She welcomed them in and showed them into her living room that was decorated with artwork that looked like it had come from every tribe indigenous to the Americas. An off-white sofa with a nubby texture and two matching chairs sat opposite each other, separated by a small rough-hewn wooden table sitting on a woven rug of warm earth tones.
âMake yourselves comfortable,â Corinne said. âIâll be right back.â She returned with a pitcher of fruit flavored iced tea and a platter of cookies, nuts, and homemade granola.
âIâll get to the point,â Heather said after Corinne had settled into the large armchair, her feet tucked beneath her. âDarci and Nadine are experts on mystery novels and the research that mystery authors conduct in writing their books. Darci recently gave a talk about poisons, particularly poison found in the seeds and pits of fruit like peaches, cherries and apples. I know the police believe that Arielle died from cyanide poisoning and that your peach facial masque might have been the culprit.â
Corinneâs lovely face took on a dark, troubled look. âI swear to you there was no cyanide in that masque. I didnât even use the pit, just the flesh of the peaches.â
âWe believe you,â Darci was quick to comment. âIt wouldnât matter if you had used the ground up pits. The only way cyanide can be absorbed through the skin is in a liquid form. Your masque was so thick, almost like clay, that it would never have worked as a poison. In fact, the clay would have helped neutralize any toxins.â
âIt does contain clay,â Corinne said, visibly relieved. âIn fact, the clay absorbed most of the juice from the peaches so the masque dries almost instantly once itâs exposed to air.â
âWell, that settles that,â Heather said. âWe just wanted to allay any fears you might have that the police could possibly find anything lethal in your masque.â
âAnd we wanted to see how youâre doing,â Nadine said.
With a nod of her head, Heather agreed.
Corinne said, âIâm managing. As you said, I know I didnât poison Arielle, accidentally or otherwise. Iâm very careful with the ingredients I use in my products. No one has ever had any kind of negative or harmful reaction, not even an allergic one.â
âBut thereâs something else troubling you,â Heather said.
âThe police also found a drink beside Arielleâs chair. Emmalyn had brought all of us smoothies as a treat.
